Greeley Pond Girls with a hatchet

About the WVAIA

In 1888, a group of guests staying at the Elliot's Hotel in Waterville Valley, NH, formed the Waterville Valley Athletic and Improvement Association- the WVAIA. Its objective was "to encourage all healthful exercise and afford facilities thereto."

From the beginning, members assumed care of the hiking trails. There was a lot of informal hiking with group picnics at the Cascades, Norway Rapids, and Greeley Ponds.

In 1898, the field in from of the Hotel was cleared and a golf course was established. Championship tournaments were organized, including the "One-Club" and a "Best Costume" tournament. The WVAIA supported tennis and built a second tennis court in the 1890's where tournaments were held.

WVAIA members arranged for the brooks to be stoked with trout fry. Swimming, square dancing, scavenger hunts, race walking, bowling, and croquet were some of the many activities and events which the WVAIA sponsored.

Today, the WVAIA continues in its historic mission, supporting North America's oldest network of hiking trails, as well as fly fishing, croquet and social gatherings for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy all that Waterville Valley, NH, has to offer.

The WVAIA is supported by a volunteer Board and Committee members and funded through our annual membership fees.
